A cruise ship has saved two injured women who were working on a luxury superyacht that sent out a distress call when it started taking on water.

The superyacht Masteka 2 had six passengers on board when it lost steering and started taking on water about 260 kilometres from Port Macquarie on the NSW mid north coast just after 5pm on Tuesday.

The Carnival Spirit cruise ship diverted its path to respond to the distress call and managed to rescue two injured workers from the sinking yacht, while the four remaining crew members chose to stay on the damaged boat to attempt repairs.

Carnival Spirit was told by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to remain with the yacht until they arrived to assist.

A tugboat from Sydney harbour was ordered to come and help bring the yacht back in, but is not expected to get to it until Thursday.
