In cruise line terms the Southern Caribbean is a bit of a catch phrase – some of the islands aren't really south – but the big plus of these itineraries is they generally call at less-crowded places. The down side is because of the distance to the islands you'll likely have to fly to San Juan or elsewhere to start your cruise. Small ship lines tend to focus on Southern Caribbean routes because their passengers are drawn to posh St. Barts and such low-key places as Nevis and the islands of the Grenadines.

Southern Caribbean cruises from San Juan typically head to Aruba, CuraƧao, and neighboring islands. Small ships embark from St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Barbados and other ports, and visit even more remote places such as the British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Nevis, and the Grenadines. Longer itineraries – some from Florida ports – may include Grenada and Barbados. The cruises are year-round, but there are more options in the winter months.

Don't go if you…
