The cruise ship Carnival Vista damaged two piers and sank some small boats at Messina Marina in Sicily, Italy. The vessel was leaving the port, but passed too close to the docks with yachts and created large waves, which damages the wooden piers and even sank some small boats. According to witness evidence, the vessel looked like disabled at some time but succeeded to leave the port, but passing too close to the piers and yachts marina. It is not yet cleat what were the circumstances around the incident, but local authorities claimed the cruise line for damaged of over 250,000 EUR. The investigation for the root cause of the incident are under way.
The cruise ship Carnival Vista was with pilot on board, when leaving Messina port in Sicily. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution. All the damaged yachts and piers were unmanned during the incident. The investigation will show if there were any mechanical and electronic failure.
“The cruise ship caused damages at two piers, one beyond repair, a number of ancillary facilities (such as anchor lines of the boats) damaged, a pilot of the mooring sunk and another dozen small boats in poor condition”, said the local authorities. “The estimated amounts of damages are over 250,000 EUR”, adds the statement.
The cruise ship Carnival Vista (IMO: 9692569) has overall length of 323.00 m, moulded beam of 48.00 m and maximum draft of 9.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 11,000 DWT and the gross tonnage is 133,500 GRT. The mega cruise ship was built a few months ago at Fincantiery Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. The ship’s maiden voyage embarked on May 1, 2016 from Trieste, Italy on a 13-day Europe Cruise that ended in Barcelona, Spain. The vessel Carnival Vista is the first ship in the Vista-class cruise ships. The vessel is the largest within Carnival Cruise Lines’s fleet and has capacity for 3,936 passengers.
